If you’ve been experiencing bladder leakage, pelvic pain, pressure or heaviness, painful intercourse, constipation, core weakness, or symptoms after pregnancy, you may have been told to “just do Kegels.”
At Elevate Pelvic Health & Wellness in Overland Park, KS, we believe pelvic floor symptoms deserve a much more comprehensive approach.
Our goal isn’t simply to treat symptoms. It’s to understand why those symptoms developed in the first place and help you return to the activities, exercise, motherhood, work, and life you love.
What Is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy?
Pelvic floor physical therapy addresses the muscles, connective tissues, nerves, breathing patterns, posture, movement habits, and lifestyle factors that influence pelvic health.
Pelvic floor therapy can help with:
Urinary leakage
Urgency and frequency
Pelvic organ prolapse
Pelvic pressure or heaviness
Pain with intercourse
Pregnancy-related discomfort
Postpartum recovery
Diastasis recti
Constipation
Tailbone pain
Low back, hip, or SI joint pain
Menopausal pelvic floor changes
Many women are told these symptoms are “normal” after having children or simply part of aging. While common, they are not something you have to accept.
Our Whole-Body Approach
The pelvic floor does not function in isolation.
The way you breathe, move, exercise, lift your children, manage stress, stand, walk, and even how your feet interact with the ground can influence pelvic floor function.
During your evaluation, we look at the entire system, including:
Breathing mechanics
Rib cage and diaphragm function
Core coordination
Posture
Hip and spinal mobility
Functional movement patterns
Pelvic floor muscle coordination
Strength and tension patterns
Nervous system regulation
By understanding the bigger picture, we can create treatment plans that address the root cause rather than simply managing symptoms.
What to Expect During Your First Visit
Your initial evaluation is a full one-on-one appointment lasting approximately one hour.
We begin with a detailed discussion of your symptoms, goals, health history, pregnancy and birth experiences, exercise habits, and daily activities.
Your assessment may include:
Movement assessment
Postural evaluation
Core assessment
Breathing evaluation
Hip and spinal mobility testing
Functional movement testing
Pelvic floor muscle assessment, if appropriate and with your consent
Internal examinations are never required and are only performed when appropriate, discussed thoroughly, and agreed upon by the patient.
Our goal is to help you feel informed, comfortable, and empowered throughout the process.
Treatment Is Never One-Size-Fits-All
Treatment may include:
Education and symptom management strategies
Exercise and strength training
Breathing and pressure management
Manual therapy
Soft tissue mobilization
Dry needling
Mobility work
Nervous system regulation strategies
Return-to-exercise guidance
Pregnancy and postpartum education
Lifestyle recommendations
Every treatment plan is individualized to your goals, symptoms, and stage of life.
Why Functional Assessment Matters
Many pelvic floor symptoms only occur during real-life activities.
You may leak while running, feel pressure while lifting your child, or notice prolapse symptoms only when standing.
This is why we often assess movement in multiple positions, including lying down, standing, and functional activities. Understanding how your body responds during movement helps us provide treatment that translates into everyday life.
You Deserve More Than “This Is Normal”
Pelvic floor symptoms are incredibly common, but they are not something you simply have to live with.
Whether you’re newly postpartum, navigating menopause, preparing for birth, returning to exercise, or struggling with symptoms you’ve had for years, help is available.
At Elevate Pelvic Health & Wellness, our mission is to provide individualized, evidence-based, whole-body pelvic floor physical therapy in the Kansas City and Overland Park communities.
If you’ve been searching for answers, we would be honored to help you begin your healing journey.
